چکیده

Extranodal marginal zone (MZ) B-cell lymphomas of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) arise from lymphoid populations that are induced by chronic inflammation in extranodal sites. The best evidence of an etiopathogenetic link is provided by the association between Helicobacter pylori-positive gastritis and gastric MALT lymphoma. Indeed, successful eradication of this microorganism with antibiotics can be followed by gastric MALT lymphoma regression in most cases. Other microbial agents have been implicated in the pathogenesis of MZ lymphoma arising at different sites. Apart from gastric MALT lymphoma, antibiotic therapies have been adequately tested only in ocular adnexal MALT lymphomas where upfront doxycycline may be a reasonable and effective initial treatment of patients with Chlamydophila psittaci-positive lymphoma before considering more aggressive strategies. In all other instances, antibiotic treatment of nongastric lymphomas remains investigational. Indeed, there is no clear consensus for the treatment of patients with gastric MALT lymphoma requiring further treatment beyond H pylori eradication or with extensive disease. Both radiotherapy and systemic treatments with chemotherapy and anti-CD20 antibodies are efficacious and thus the experience of individual centers and each patient's preferences in terms of adverse effects are important parameters in the decision process.

Extranodal involvement in lymphoma – A Pictorial Essay and Retrospective Analysis of 281 PET/CT studies

Objective(s): The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of PET-CT in identification of different patterns of extranodal involvement in Hodgkin’s disease (HD) and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) and to enlist the common sites of extranodal involvement in each histological type and compare our results with the existing literature. Methods: In this retrospective study of 281 cases of lymphomas of...

Gastric MALT Lymphoma Presenting as a Large Solitary Submucosal Mass

Herein, we report on a 24-year-old woman with a large well-marginated gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. She presented with dysphagia and epigastric pain. In esophagogastroduodenoscopy there was a huge bulging submucosal mass with normal appearing mucosa in the cardia in addition to a grade B gastro-esophageal reflux disease. She was treated with a proton pump inhibit...

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of MALT involving the lungs, the stomach, and the colon.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of MALT, previously known as MALT lymphoma, is a low grade B-cell Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Its most frequent locations are the gastrointestinal tract and the lungs while that of the colon is rare. Involvement of multiple mucosal sites is not a frequent finding but it does occur. We describe a case of a 70-year-old man who presented with extranodal marginal...

MALT lymphoma : recent advances in aetiology and molecular genetics.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a common low grade B-cell lymphoma arising from a background of chronic inflammatory disease at a number of mucosal sites. Those originating in the stomach are causatively linked to Helicobacter pylori infection and eradication of the bacterium with antibiotics leads to long-term complete regression of the lymphoma in aproximately 70% of case...

Variable frequencies of t(11;18)(q21;q21) in MALT lymphomas of different sites: significant association with CagA strains of H pylori in gastric MALT lymphoma.

t(11;18)(q21;q21) is a specific chromosomal translocation associated with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. It fuses the amino terminal of the API2 gene to the carboxyl terminal of the MALT1 gene and generates a chimeric fusion product. Although the translocation is frequently detected in gastric and pulmonary MALT lymphoma, its incidence in MALT lymphomas from other sites is l...
